If you are a girl with PMDD, you understand the difficulties of being misdiagnosed, searching online for answers, explaining your situation to others, and feeling like you’re fighting for your well-being every month.
I realized my moods were changing drastically before my period, especially in the week leading up to it. Since finding out I struggled with PMDD, I’ve been working on finding ways to manage my hormonal mood swings.
What is PMDD?
It is PMS on steroids!
Many relate, but there’s little research on PMDD, resulting in misdiagnoses for females.
Ways In which I improve My PMDD:
Tracking my Cycle
We might worry about the upcoming weeks before our period, but it’s helpful to keep track of our menstrual cycles. I use the app FLO to monitor my cycles and I also pay for the yearly premium because it is worth it!
This is how I found out from my doctor that I have PMDD; I had been tracking my symptoms for months on the app and noticed the same mood patterns each month.
Vitamins
I’ve had to try many vitamins before discovering that consistency is key; the three that improved my PMDD symptoms are: Omega 3 + Vitamin B6 + Magnesium Glycinate.
Changing my diet
During the weeks leading to my period I have a strict diet; although it may be hard due to cravings . Eating healthy foods benefits not only your physical period symptoms but also your mental health.
Maintaining a healthy diet outside the luteal phase is important. It can be challenging due to lifestyle, but it begins with changing bad habits.
Guarding My Space
If you feel as though your mood may negatively affect others around you, it is okay to take the space you need. Some people may not understand it; but you’re doing it for your mental health. Don’t feel guilty for needing some space .
It is also great to talk to family and friends about it, as it makes it easier for you and them when they have an understanding of what you go through every month.
