Life With PMDD, The Soft Truths: Unmasking the Reality of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

As someone who struggled with PMDD for years, without even knowing what it was. I think it is important to bring awareness to it because it’s not talked about enough.

Unmasking the reality of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

This series is my gentle way to unmask what life feels like, as someone who has lived with PMDD for years.

Throughout the series I will go more in depth about the symptoms I personally experienced, some common or some less talked about. How it affected my relationships and communication to friends and family. I’ll talk about ways I helped navigate life to make my experience more manageable. While there isn’t a proven single cure for PMDD, there are methods and tools that help.

PMDD is often described as “PMS but on steroids”, and those who live with it know that it is not an exaggeration. It may feel even more intense and overwhelming.

How I Found Out I Had PMDD

I discovered I had PMDD during a regular doctor’s appointment. Tracking my menstrual cycle consistently helped me notice the patterns within my cycle.

I used the FLO app to track and predict when my period would arrive; and it was also my personal journal for my mood, cravings etc. Over time, being consistent with tracking my mood, emotional shifts, physical symptoms made every thing much clearer.

When My Emotions Became Heightened

The detailed tracking allowed me to recognize the patterns when reviewed with my primary care provider.

My mood would become excessively negative and emotionally intense about one to two weeks before my period. Once my period began, my emotions would stabilize again.
